Dadasaheb Phalke Award recipient Mithun Chakraborty, 74, is a veteran actor in Bollywood.
The news on X was delivered by Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. “Generations are inspired by Mithun Da’s remarkable cinematic journey,” the writer stated. It is with great honour that we announce the awarding of the renowned actor Sh. Mithun Chakraborty Ji for his legendary contribution to Indian cinema by the Dadasaheb Phalke Selection Jury.”
The actor will receive the honor during the ceremony for the 70th National Film Awards, which takes place on October 8, 2024.
In response to the significant accomplishment, Mithun said to ANI, “I don’t know how to put it. I cannot laugh or cry with happiness; main hass sakta hun, na Khushi mein ro sakta hun. I’m a boy from the streets of Kolkata; to be chosen for such a distinction is not easy.This was beyond my imagination. I’m overjoyed. I dedicate this to my global fan base as well as my family.”
Narendra Modi, the prime minister, congratulated the actor. “Happy to receive the esteemed Dadasaheb Phalke Award for Shri Mithun Chakraborty Ji, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Indian film. A cultural icon, his varied performances have won the admiration of audiences of all ages. Best wishes and congratulations to him (sic).”
Actor Namashi Chakraborty, Mithun’s son, expressed his pride in his father and expressed his satisfaction at his significant accomplishment to India Today Digital.
I’m incredibly honored and proud. My father is a fantastic citizen and a self-made superstar. Millions of people find inspiration in his life story. We are all incredibly happy about this wonderful honor,” Namashi remarked.
Mithun was given the esteemed Padma Bhushan Award earlier this year.
The actor made his film debut in the play Mrigayaa, which won a National Award in 1976 and was helmed by Mrinal Sen. For the movie, he took home his first-ever National Film Award for Best Actor.
The 1979 spy thriller Surakshaa, which was followed by hits like Disco Dancer, Dance Dance, Pyar Jhukta Nahin, Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki, and Commando, among others, solidified his ascent to fame in the 1980s. In a ten-year period, Mithun set a record by starring in over 100 films. He became well-known to his followers as “Disco Dancer” thanks to his dancing performances to songs like “I Am a Disco Dancer” and “Jimmy Jimmy.”
