WhatsApp Implements Policy Change: Prohibits Screenshots of Contact Profile Pictures

WhatsApp is implementing a new security measure that will restrict users from taking screenshots of other users’ profile pictures. The platform, known for its commitment to user privacy and security, is rolling out this feature as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance protection against privacy invasion and impersonation.

Previously, WhatsApp introduced the option for users to share one-view photos or videos, addressing concerns related to privacy breaches. However, the ability for users to capture screenshots of profile pictures without notification posed a significant challenge, particularly in combating scams and unauthorized use of images. In response, WhatsApp is now extending its restrictions to profile pictures, ensuring that users are notified if someone attempts to capture a screenshot.

The rollout of this feature is currently underway, with users expected to receive it in the coming weeks. Reports suggest that the feature was first introduced in the WhatsApp Android beta version 2.24.4.25. When users attempt to take a screenshot of a profile picture, they will be met with a notification stating “Can’t take a screenshot due to app restrictions.”

One notable aspect of this security enhancement is that users cannot modify or disable this feature, underscoring WhatsApp’s commitment to preserving user privacy. Similar security measures, such as Profile Picture Guard on Facebook, have been effective in preventing unauthorized screenshotting of photos.

While the feature is currently available to a broader user base, its rollout to all users is imminent. However, there is no information available regarding its availability on iOS devices at this time. This development not only reinforces WhatsApp’s dedication to user privacy but also gives the platform a competitive edge over other messaging apps like Signal and Telegram.
