Uber India Implements Safety Measure: Removing Phone Numbers Shared in Chat for Rider and Driver Privacy

Uber is addressing the unique challenges of the Indian market by enhancing its array of safety features. In an exclusive conversation with India Today Tech, Sooraj Nair, Uber India’s safety head, sheds light on one significant advancement: the proactive masking of users’ personal phone numbers.

Within the gig economy paradigm, where users and service providers interact as partners rather than employees, privacy and safety risks loom large during their interactions. Recognizing this, companies like Uber and Zomato are increasingly prioritizing risk mitigation. Uber India has taken a proactive stance to safeguard user and driver privacy by implementing measures to automatically delete shared phone numbers within chat conversations.

Sooraj Nair underscores that while Uber already cautions users against sharing personal or account information in chats, the company is now taking further steps to address this issue. By deploying advanced detection mechanisms within the app, Uber can now identify instances of phone number sharing and promptly mask them, mitigating the risk of inadvertent exposure of private information.

The underlying rationale behind this initiative is the acknowledgment that users and drivers may not fully grasp the potential privacy implications of sharing phone numbers. Uber’s aim is to foster an environment where sensitive personal information is not exchanged within the app at all, thereby bolstering user privacy and security.

This latest development is part of Uber’s broader efforts to enhance safety features within its platform. Alongside proactive number masking, Uber has also introduced measures such as Phone Anonymisation and Addresses Anonymisation. These updates ensure that both riders’ and drivers’ phone numbers and addresses remain anonymous during and after trips, adding an additional layer of privacy protection.

Furthermore, post-trip, Uber conceals precise rider addresses from driver trip histories, displaying only generalized area information. This comprehensive approach not only minimizes the risk of inappropriate contact between parties but also safeguards user data, reinforcing Uber’s commitment to prioritizing safety and privacy within its platform.
