“Tragedy Strikes: One Killed as Newly Constructed Bridge Collapses in Manipur”

A truck fell off a newly constructed bailey bridge over the Imphal river, resulting in the death of one person. The incident took place at around 6 am on Sunday, within the Wangoi police station limits in Imphal West. The truck, carrying firewood, collapsed along with the bridge, causing the death of the driver, Md Borjao, 45, from Mayang Imphal Bengoon Yangbi, Imphal West. While three individuals managed to escape from the truck, the driver was unable to do so.

An investigation into the incident has been ordered by Minister of Municipal Administration, Housing and Urban Development Y Khemchand, who visited the site along with MLA Khuraijam Loken. Minister Khemchand has stated that if any individual is found responsible for the collapse, strict action will be taken. Additionally, reconstruction work on the bridge will commence soon.

The driver’s body was recovered through a joint rescue operation by Wangoi Police Station, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and the Manipur Fire Service team. It is worth noting that the same bridge had previously collapsed twice, although no casualties were reported on those occasions.
