According to a government official, during the course of the last 24 hours on the festival of “Jitiya” or “Jivitputrika,” as many as 46 people—including 37 children—died in different drowning occurrences across Bihar.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed his condolences for the deaths, which included seven women, and said that the deceased’s next of kin would get an ex-gratia payment of ₹4 lakh apiece.
East and West Champaran, Aurangabad, Kaimur, Buxar, Siwan, Rohtas, Saran, Patna, Vaishali, Muzaffarpur, Samastipur, Gopalganj, and Arwal districts were among those from whom drowning occurrences were reported.
43 bodies have been recovered thus far. ₹4 lakh ex-gratia will be provided to the victims’ relatives. According to a disaster management department (DMD) official, eight of them have already been paid out.
For search and rescue operations, DMD has put pressure on a number of teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).
Mothers observe the “Jitiya” holiday in hopes for the well and prosperity of their offspring. The events happened when kids were swimming in different bodies of water with their moms.
Eight children perished in the Aurangabad district: four in Kushaha village of the Madanpur police station and four in Itahat village under the Baruna police station.
Reports from Kaimur state that seven children perished while bathing in the Durgawati River in Bhabhua and a pond in Mohania police station locations.
On Wednesday night, four drowning cases were reported from Amnabad village, which is under the Bihta police station area in rural Patna. In the Saran district, five people drowned—two of them boys—in the Daudpur, Manjhi, Taraiya, and Marhaura police stations.
Aurangabad District Magistrate Srikant Shastri stated, “The incidents occurred when the victims, along with their family members, went for a holy dip in the water bodies.”
