The event was truly remarkable. France delivered on its promise of an unprecedented Olympics opening ceremony. Breaking tradition, the grand spectacle took place outdoors instead of in a conventional stadium. Athletes were transported on boats in a floating ‘Parade of Nations’ along a 6km stretch of the River Seine, with crowds of spectators lining the central part of the city. Despite the rain, the spirits of athletes, performers, and fans remained high as the Olympic Games made a stylish return to the City of Lights after a century.
French President Emmanuel Macron officially inaugurated the Olympic Games following a powerful address by International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach, who warmly greeted the athletes from 206 NOCs, including the Refugee Olympic Team. Bach drew inspiration from John Lennon and emphasized the importance of unity in “a world torn apart by wars and conflicts.” The stirring rendition of Lennon’s Imagine by French singer and songwriter Juliette Armanet preceded Bach’s speech.
The opening ceremony was enhanced by the presence of renowned artists such as Lady Gaga and Celine Dion, who brought a unique touch to the event. The ceremony showcased Paris’s iconic landmarks and was centered around 12 different themes, including liberty, equality, fraternity, sisterhood, sportsmanship, and celebration.
The pinnacle of your journey has arrived. As athletes who have journeyed to Paris, you now stand as Olympians. Stepping foot into the Olympic Village, the realization dawns upon you that you are part of something greater than yourself. We are all united in this global event, abiding by the same rules and showing mutual respect. In this Olympic realm, we find our place. As Olympians, we not only show respect for one another, but we also stand in solidarity, caring for each other,” expressed Bach.
Over 6,000 athletes and nearly 300,000 spectators gathered along the River Seine for the opening ceremony, creating a lasting memory. Despite some critics, the closing performance, where Paris paid tribute to legends, overshadowed any shortcomings.
