At present, there is no diplomat from the Afghan Republic posted in India.
The Afghanistan Embassy in New Delhi has officially announced that it will be closed permanently.
In an official statement regarding the closure of its diplomatic mission in New Delhi, the Afghan Embassy said that the decision has been taken due to the ongoing difficulties with the Indian government from November 23, 2023.
The embassy’s decision to resume operations comes after earlier suspending its activities on September 30. The Embassy hopes that the Government of India will adopt a more favorable attitude, which will allow the Mission to function normally.
The embassy acknowledged that there may be individuals who will attempt to portray the actions as an internal conflict, including diplomats who have reportedly pledged their loyalty to the Taliban. The embassy further said that the decision was taken due to significant differences of policy and interests.
The Afghan Embassy in India sincerely appreciates the understanding and support of the Afghan citizens. We are truly grateful for their assistance throughout our mission. Despite the challenges they face in terms of resources and authority, we have made consistent efforts to improve their situation in the absence of a legitimate government in Kabul.
The embassy statement highlighted the significant decline in the Afghan community living in India in the last two years and three months. Afghan refugees, students and businessmen are leaving the country, resulting in about half the number of people living there than in August 2021. Additionally, the issuance of new visas has been extremely limited during this period. The embassy stressed its dedication to transparency, accountability and equitable treatment for the Afghan community. He also acknowledged the historical ties between Afghanistan and India and the importance of bilateral relations.
