The Delhi Police employed artificial intelligence technology to unravel a murder case involving an unidentified man discovered deceased beneath the Geeta Colony flyover in the city’s capital. A dedicated team of 30 individuals utilized AI to construct a visual representation of the deceased man’s face, which was then disseminated through posters in an effort to gather information regarding his identity.
Following the discovery of the body on January 10, the police initiated an investigation and filed a report under Section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. The autopsy report indicated that the cause of death was strangulation, despite the absence of any visible injuries on the body.
According to a senior police officer, “This was a challenging case for us, as there were no identifying documents found in the victim’s possession. After taking custody of the body, an autopsy was conducted after 72 hours, revealing that the cause of death was strangulation.”
To aid in the identification process, the police generated an AI-generated image of the deceased man’s face with his eyes open. Additionally, they altered the background before uploading the image onto the CCTN website, which is the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network. This initiative proved successful, as the deceased man’s brother came across the image and promptly contacted the police, positively identifying the deceased as Hitendra.
The officer further explained, “By utilizing AI technology, we digitally reconstructed the victim’s face, ensuring his eyes were open, and modified the background. This modified image was then uploaded onto the CCTN website, which serves as a platform connecting police forces across eight different states. Furthermore, we strategically distributed over 400 posters throughout the national capital and shared them digitally via WhatsApp groups until January 12.”
Subsequent investigations revealed that Hitendra had been involved in several disputes with certain individuals. Approximately two months prior to his demise, he had engaged in a physical altercation with two individuals over a woman. These same individuals met with Hitendra on January 9 and subsequently committed the act of murder.
Three individuals, namely Paramveer Singh, Harneet Singh, and Priyanka, have been apprehended by the police. These individuals have admitted to the act of strangling Hitendra to his demise due to personal matters.
