The Chief Minister further requested the Central government to dispatch a delegation for the assessment of the impacted regions encompassing Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, and Kancheepuram.
On Tuesday, December 5, Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister, M.K. Stalin, penned a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urgently seeking an interim relief fund of ₹5,060 crore to address the substantial damages caused by Cyclone Michaung earlier in the week. Earlier during his media interaction on the same day, Mr. Stalin had indicated the State government’s intention to request ₹5,000 crore as immediate relief.
The government’s press release highlighted Mr. Stalin’s emphasis in the letter regarding the unparalleled rainfall and resultant damage in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu due to the cyclone. Notably, crucial infrastructures like roads, bridges, public buildings, and other essential facilities in these four districts, particularly in the Greater Chennai Corporation area, suffered extensive damage. The Chief Minister provided comprehensive details about these damages in his letter, specifically outlining the urgent need for the immediate release of ₹5,060 crore as interim relief.
Stating that a thorough evaluation of the devastation had commenced, the CM mentioned plans to submit a comprehensive report on the impact, followed by a subsequent request for additional financial assistance. Additionally, Mr. Stalin urged the Union government to dispatch a team for on-ground inspection of the affected regions, underscoring the gravity of the situation and the necessity for immediate support and assessment.
