Exiled author Taslima Nasrin claims that Hasina expelled her from the country to appease Islamist factions.

Exiled Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen, known for her strong opposition to communalism, has highlighted an ironic situation regarding the recent departure of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina amidst intense student-led protests. Ms. Nasreen remarked that Hasina had expelled her from Bangladesh to appease Islamist factions, and now those very factions are involved in the student protests that have compelled Hasina to leave the nation.

“Hasina, in her attempt to satisfy the Islamists, expelled me from my homeland in 1999 when I returned to Bangladesh to be with my mother during her final moments, and she has since barred my re-entry. Ironically, the same Islamists who were part of the student protests have now driven Hasina to seek refuge outside the country,” Ms. Nasreen stated in an online message. Ms. Hasina departed for India on a military aircraft yesterday and is expected to travel to London to apply for asylum in the United Kingdom.
