Senior Apple Designer Departing, Disbanding Ive-Led Team

Bart Andre, a longstanding member of Apple’s renowned design team alongside Jony Ive, is preparing to conclude his tenure with the company, spanning more than three decades. Reports indicate that Andre, who joined Apple in 1992, has informed colleagues of his decision to retire, according to sources familiar with the situation as cited by CNBC.

Throughout his extensive career at Apple, Andre played a pivotal role as one of Ive’s key deputies within the industrial design division. Collaborating closely with Ive, he contributed to shaping the visual appeal and functionality of numerous flagship Apple products during the past thirty years.

His departure signifies the departure of one of the few remaining senior designers associated with the Ive era. The core team that collaborated on groundbreaking products like the iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch has gradually dispersed in recent years. Beginning with Ive’s departure in 2019, other prominent designers such as Colin Burns, Shota Aoyagi, and Peter Russell-Clarke have also moved on, with their exits occurring around the close of 2022.

This trend of key personnel exits raises questions about the current state of Apple’s design divisions. Presently, both the industrial design and software design teams report to Jeff Williams, Apple’s Chief Operating Officer, who lacks a background in design but is renowned for his operational acumen. Allegations of cost-cutting measures under Williams’ leadership have reportedly caused discontent among staff members.

The notable turnover underscores the significant evolution within Apple since the days when Ive’s closely-knit design team meticulously crafted beloved products over several years. Today, the company has replenished its ranks with fresh talent recruited from outside Apple, reflecting a shift in its approach to design and innovation.
The design team at Apple is pivotal in conceptualizing the company’s upcoming devices and software. They meticulously refine product elements, from iPhone ringtones to features like the Apple Watch’s cardio tap. Additionally, this group has been instrumental in introducing innovative product lines such as the Apple Watch and Vision Pro.

The effectiveness of Apple’s new design team in rekindling the innovative spark of the past remains uncertain. However, many of the seasoned veterans responsible for iconic creations like the iPod and iPhone have now transitioned away from the company.
