“Scoring Victory: Ajay Devgn Leads the Team in ‘Maidaan’ as Football Coach SA Rahim – A Review”

Film: Maidaan
Cast: Ajay Devgn, Priyamani, Boman Irani, Keerhy Suresh
Director: Amit Ravindernath Sharma
Producer: Boney Kapoor

In a nation obsessed with cricket and as the IPL frenzy engulfs the country, a heartwarming film emerges that celebrates Indian Football. Maidaan, directed by Amit Sharma, transports us back to the 1950s and 60s, a time when India’s sporting achievements were not yet synonymous with winning the Prudential Cup in 1983. This film sheds light on the unsung hero of Indian sports, Syed Abdul Rahim, a football coach who played a pivotal role in securing a gold medal for India in the 1962 Asian Games.

Ajay Devgn portrays the character of Syed Abdul Rahim, also known as SA, a man fueled by conviction and determination. Despite being fully aware of the disadvantages and uncertainties surrounding his team’s abilities and strengths, SA takes on the challenge of coaching them. He is a maverick, introducing revolutionary ideas and challenging the conservative mindset. SA fearlessly exposes the political and corrupt elements within the sports system of that time. He upholds socialist and secular ideals, believing in selecting players based on talent rather than background or connections.

Before the final match between India and South Korea in the 1962 Asian Games, SA addresses his team, emphasizing that despite being 11 individuals, they are united as one on the field – they are India! This sentiment echoes the character of coach Kabir, played by Shahrukh Khan, in the movie Chak De. However, it is disheartening to realize that even after decades, Indian sports still grapple with corruption in the selection process and political interference, tarnishing the spirit of sportsmanship.

SA faces a formidable opponent in the form of the ruthless yet influential journalist Roy Choudhury, portrayed brilliantly by Gajraj Rao. Choudhury spares no effort in criticizing SA, his beliefs, and his character.

Ajay Devgn, known for his expressive eyes and intense performances, confronts the vengeful Choudhury head-on. Priyamani plays Runa Rahim, SA’s wife, who displays unwavering strength during her husband’s toughest moments. His family remains steadfast in their support.

Despite its three-hour runtime, Maidaan can feel a bit tedious at times, with certain parts of the story dragging and loose ends left untied.

Nevertheless, Maidaan is definitely worth a watch. There is something captivating about sports dramas that mirrors real life experiences. The emotional lows of defeat and the exhilaration of victory are portrayed effectively. Maidaan serves as a tribute to sports and one man’s unwavering dedication to the game.
