Sheikh Hasina is poised to make a comeback as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, as her party, the Awami League, emerged victorious in the 12th general election. Despite being boycotted by the main opposition and its allies, the Awami League secured a resounding win, granting Hasina her fifth term in office. Having governed the South Asian nation since 2009, the 76-year-old politician now holds the record for the longest-serving Prime Minister in Bangladesh’s history. The election, although marred by incidents of pre-poll violence, saw the Awami League claim 223 out of the 300 seats in Parliament, as reported by the Bangladesh Election Commission.
The recent general elections in the neighboring country recorded a voter turnout of only 41.8 percent, which is nearly half compared to the 2018 polls and the lowest since 1991.Under the leadership of the ailing former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, who is currently under house arrest due to corruption charges, the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) decided to boycott the elections, denouncing them as a ‘sham’.Based on the final results, candidates from the Awami League secured 223 seats, while the parliamentary opposition Jatiya Party (JAPA) obtained 11 seats. Additionally, independent candidates, including rebels from the ruling party, managed to win 61 seats.Earlier in the day, Pranay Kumar, the Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka, paid a visit to Sheikh Hasina and conveyed greetings on behalf of his country.Ambassadors from various other nations, such as Russia, China, Bhutan, the Philippines, Singapore, and Sri Lanka, also met with the Prime Minister and assured their continued support to Bangladesh.Shortly after her victory, Sheikh Hasina expressed gratitude to the diplomats and requested their cooperation in the new government’s efforts towards the development and prosperity of Bangladesh.
