“OpenAI Now Allows Unconditional Storage of ChatGPT Conversations”

Previously, users of ChatGPT were required to consent to OpenAI utilizing their data for training purposes in order to store chat history. However, this condition has been lifted. In April of the previous year, OpenAI introduced the option to disable chat history in response to concerns about data usage for training. Initial privacy policies of OpenAI indicated the potential collection of personal information for legitimate business purposes, including names, email addresses, and payment details. This sparked debates regarding the ethics of data usage for training purposes. The Italian government even prohibited the use of ChatGPT, alleging unlawful data collection. Now, a significant stride has been made to prioritize user privacy.

In a recent announcement on X, OpenAI revealed that ChatGPT users can now store chat history without worrying about data being utilized for training. Essentially, even with chat history enabled, user data will not contribute to model training, according to OpenAI. This feature applies to both free and paid users.

OpenAI’s post stated, “We’re updating our data controls for ChatGPT Free and Plus users. Now, you can access your chat history regardless of whether you’re opted into training for model improvement. If you’ve previously opted out, your choice will remain. Available on web today, and mobile soon.”

To ensure data isn’t used for training, users can navigate to their name at the bottom left corner of the screen, proceed to settings, and click on Data Controls. From there, they can toggle the “Improve the model for everyone” option off.

An accompanying note under the option explains, “Allow your content to be used to train our models, which makes ChatGPT better for you and everyone who uses it. We take steps to protect your privacy.”

Alternatively, users who are comfortable with OpenAI using their data for training purposes can leave the option enabled.

ChatGPT has evolved significantly since its launch in November 2022. Initially powered by GPT 3.5 LLM, OpenAI later introduced the more advanced GPT-4, accessible through premium subscriptions. Consequently, access to ChatGPT running on GPT-4 became exclusive to paying users. The AI chatbot has seen enhancements in its awareness of events, quality of responses, and ability to store history and recall instructions over the past few months.
