The National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson, Rekha Sharma, has accused the West Bengal government of suppressing the voices of numerous women in Sandeshkhali during protests against alleged TMC-led atrocities. In response, Sharma has demanded the imposition of President’s Rule in the state. She led a delegation of the commission to the area to instill confidence in the women there, encouraging them to speak out. Sharma claimed that the Mamata Banerjee government is attempting to silence women to prevent the truth from being revealed.
After speaking with women in the area, she discovered the horrifying situation in Sandeshkhali, with several women sharing their ordeals. One woman even reported being raped inside the TMC party office. Sharma insisted that President’s Rule be imposed in Bengal and stated that it would be mentioned in their report. When asked about the TMC’s allegations that the NCW is influenced by the BJP, Sharma declined to comment.
The protests in Sandeshkhali, which have been triggered by allegations of sexual abuse and other atrocities by some TMC leaders against villagers, have sparked a heated political blame game.
