“Modi in Kolkata: India’s First Underwater Metro Route Unveiled Alongside ₹15,400 Crore Projects”

PM Modi in Bengal: Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited West Bengal for the second time in just five days. During his 10-day tour of 12 states and union territories, he inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of projects worth ₹15,400 crore in Kolkata on Wednesday, March 6.

A Chronicle of Projects Inaugurated by PM Modi in West Bengal

PM Narendra Modi has officially opened the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section of Kolkata Metro’s East-West corridor, marking India’s first foray into underwater Metro services. The 4.8-km stretch of the East-West Metro, constructed at a cost of ₹4,965 crore, will house the deepest Metro station in India at Howrah, situated 30 meters below ground level. This corridor is designed to link important areas like the IT hub Salt Lake Sector V.


The Central Railways has announced that although the inauguration of the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section of Kolkata Metro’s East-West corridor took place today, passenger services will commence at a later date.
During his visit to Kolkata, the Prime Minister also launched other train services aimed at improving urban mobility. These services include the Kavi Subhash-Hemanta Mukhopadhyay and the Taratala-Majerhat Metro sections.


Additionally, PM Modi inaugurated the Pune Metro stretch from Ruby Hall Clinic to Ramwadi, the Kochi Metro Rail Phase I Extension project (Phase IB) from SN Junction Metro station to Tripunithura Metro station, the Agra Metro stretch from Taj East Gate to Mankameshwar, and the Duhai-Modinagar (North) section of the Delhi-Meerut RRTS Corridor.


Later in the day, PM Modi is scheduled to address a public gathering in Barasat, located in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district, where Sandeshkhali is situated.

PM Modi’s last visit to Bengal

Last week, Prime Minister Modi paid a visit to West Bengal, where he held two rallies in Arambagh, Hooghly, and Krishnanagar, Nadia. During his speeches, he criticized the TMC government led by Mamata Banerjee for the “atrocities on women” in Sandeshkhali, stating that there is widespread anger across the nation regarding this issue. He urged the people to ensure the defeat of TMC in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Additionally, Modi had a meeting with Mamata Banerjee at Raj Bhavan in Kolkata, which the chief minister described as a “courtesy meeting” following the protocol.
