Following the detection of a sub-variant and the COVID-19 scare in Kerala, the Karnataka government has implemented a new regulation. It is now mandatory for individuals above the age of 60, those with comorbidities such as heart and kidney disease, and those exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms like cold and cough to wear masks in public places. This precautionary measure aims to combat the spread of the infection.
In addition, the Union Government has communicated with state governments, urging them to enhance surveillance of Influenza-like illnesses (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Illnesses (SARI). The government has also advised increasing testing, conducting genome sequencing on samples, and implementing other necessary measures.
During his visit to Kodagu, Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Dinesh Gundu Rao, emphasized the importance of testing. He instructed hospitals to conduct more tests to determine the infection rate within the community. Only through testing can the spread of the infection be confirmed, allowing appropriate actions to be taken. Individuals with respiratory illnesses are strongly advised to undergo COVID-19 tests, as this will help determine the positivity rate. The situation across the state will be closely monitored by officials, with increased surveillance in border districts.
There is currently no need to impose any restrictions on movement or gatherings as the situation is not serious. However, certain groups are advised to wear masks and health authorities should remain vigilant. The government will issue an advisory soon. The State COVID-19 Technical Advisory Committee has recommended wearing masks, surveillance in border districts, and increased testing. Enhanced surveillance measures should be implemented in border districts that share borders with Kerala. The government will determine necessary additional actions based on the situation. There are currently no restrictions on the movement or gathering of people, including Ayyappa pilgrims returning from Kerala. The Union Government has advised states to put in place public health measures and arrangements to minimize the risk of transmission during the upcoming festive season.
