In summary,
- Adrone detonated close to Netanyahu’s Caesarea private property.
- When the attack occurred, Netanyahu and his spouse were not in the room.
- Air defenses shot down two more drones that were fired from Lebanon.
According to Reuters, on Saturday, a drone launched from Lebanon burst close to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s private home in Caesarea, a neighborhood in southern Haifa. Netanyahu and his spouse were not present during the strike, according to the prime minister’s office. The incident occurred two days after Israel deposed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar in Gaza.
Air defenses shot down two more drones fired from Lebanon, setting off alarms throughout the Tel Aviv region. But the third one hit a building in Caesarea and burst into a thunderous explosion.
According to the Saudi news source Al-Hadath, the drone attack caused damage to a portion of the structure. There were no known causalities, though.
According to Israeli media, the drone took off from Lebanon and traveled around 70 kilometers before colliding with the Caesarea skyscraper.
Days have passed since Israeli forces assassinated Yahya Sinwar, the mastermind behind Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack on Israel that started the Gaza War, after a year-long pursuit.
Additionally, Israel released a video of Sinwar’s final moments, in which the gravely wounded leader of Hamas is seen hurling a stick at an Israeli drone just before he is killed.
Despite international calls for an early ceasefire, Hamas has vowed to continue fighting. The deputy to Sinwar, Khalil al-Hayya, predicted that Hamas would grow even more powerful after the death of its leader, while Netanyahu referred to it as a “significant turning point in the demise of the terrorist organization.”
The Iranian-backed Hamas group has received backing from Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader. The term “Axis of Resistance” alludes to the militias in Gaza, Yemen, Syria, Lebanon, and Iran that Khamenei vowed would not be stopped by Sinwar’s passing.
“His (Sinwar) loss is undoubtedly painful for the Axis of Resistance, but this front did not stop advancing with the martyrdom of prominent figures… Hamas is alive and will remain alive,” said Khamenei.
There are fears that an all-out conflict between Israel and proxies backed by Iran in the Middle East may quickly escalate in response to the killing of Sinwar and the drone attack that followed close to Netanyahu’s residence.
