India’s triumph and enduring impact in the 1971 war: Vijay Diwas 2023.

Every year on December 16th, Victory Day is observed to commemorate the triumph of the Indian Armed Forces over Pakistan in the 1971 war and to honor the brave soldiers who laid down their lives for their country. Following 13 days of intense fighting, India emerged victorious on December 16, 1971, leading to the establishment of Bangladesh from the former East Pakistan.
On this significant day, General Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi, the Chief of Staff of the Pakistan Armed Forces, surrendered along with 93,000 soldiers to the Indian Army and the Mukti Bahini of Bangladesh, marking the largest military surrender since World War II.
India takes this day as an opportunity to reflect upon the sacrifices made by its defense forces during the 1971 war, while Bangladesh celebrates it as ‘Bijoy Dibos’ or Victory Day.

Vijay Diwas 2023: Historical Account
The commencement of the 1971 war witnessed a brutal genocide inflicted upon the inhabitants of East Pakistan by the oppressive Pakistani military regime, under the leadership of General Yahya Khan. The conflict arose following the triumph of the Awami League, led by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, in the 1970 elections. Subsequently, the Pakistani military resorted to coercive measures to manipulate the election outcome, resulting in a massive exodus of individuals from East Pakistan. It was during this critical juncture that India intervened.

Indira Gandhi, the Prime Minister of India at that time, provided refuge to those fleeing from across the border. The situation further deteriorated on December 3, 1971, when Pakistan initiated air strikes on 11 Indian air bases. Consequently, Indira Gandhi instructed General Sam Manekshaw, India’s Army Chief of Staff, to launch a comprehensive war against Pakistan.

India extended support to Bangladeshi nationalist groups and executed ‘Operation Trident,’ led by the Indian Navy, with the objective of targeting the Karachi port. Following 13 days of intense combat, India emerged triumphant as General Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi of Pakistan signed the instrument of surrender, leading to the capitulation of 93,000 Pakistani troops.

Vijay Diwas, which commemorates India’s remarkable victory in the 1971 war, holds immense importance in the annals of modern Indian history. It serves as a poignant reminder of the valor and resilience displayed by the Indian armed forces. This significant day, observed on 16th December, is marked by grand parades and significant ceremonies in both India and Bangladesh.
Apart from its historical relevance, Vijay Diwas also carries cultural and political significance, underscoring the deep-rooted bonds that exist between India and Bangladesh.
