Union home minister Amit Shah announced on Saturday that India will be fortifying its border with Myanmar, similar to the measures taken along the Bangladesh border, in order to prevent infiltration. During the passing out parade of the first batch of the newly-formed Assam Police Commando battalions, he also mentioned that the government is considering discontinuing the free-movement facility with Myanmar. This decision aims to ensure the protection of the India-Myanmar border, just as it has been done with the Bangladesh border. This move comes after Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh’s appeal to the Union government last year to halt the Free Movement Regime (FMR) along the Indo-Myanmar border to combat illegal immigration. Additionally, efforts are being made to construct a fence along the border with Myanmar in the state of Manipur.
The Government of India has announced that it will implement measures to secure the India-Myanmar border, similar to the protection provided along the Bangladesh border. This decision comes after Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh’s request to halt the Free Movement Regime (FMR) in order to address the issue of illegal immigration. Additionally, efforts are being made to fence the border with Myanmar. Currently, only a small portion of the 1,643 km border is fenced, specifically in Manipur. The FMR was initially established in the 1970s to accommodate the familial and ethnic ties between the people residing along the India-Myanmar border.
Shah commended PM Modi’s policies for the northeastern states, highlighting the significant improvement in law and order across the country under the prime minister’s leadership over the past decade. He also emphasized the successful mission of promoting peace and development in the northeast region. Notably, Bodoland has experienced a remarkable transformation with no incidents of violence in the last three years, paving the way for progress and development. Earlier today, Shah actively participated in the 60th raising day of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) in Tezpur and the 13th triennial conference of the All Bathou Mahasabha in Dekhiajuli. Furthermore, the union home minister unveiled a book titled ‘Assam’s Braveheart Lachit Barphukan’ and inaugurated the riverfront beautification project along the Brahmaputra in Guwahati during the evening.
