“Government Urges FSSAI to Take Action Against Nestle Over Sugar in Cerelac”

The Union Consumer Affairs Ministry has called upon the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to take decisive action against Nestle following concerns over the sugar content in its baby products. In a letter addressed to FSSAI CEO G Kamala Vardhana Rao on April 18, Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare highlighted reports from Public Eye, a Swiss investigation agency, which raised alarming findings about Nestle’s manufacturing practices in India.

According to Khare, the reports allege that Nestle has been adding 2.7 grams of sugar per serving to its Cerelac baby cereals sold in India, while refraining from such practices in other countries such as Germany, Switzerland, France, and the UK. Khare emphasized the gravity of the situation, noting that excessive sugar in baby products poses significant risks to the health and safety of children in India.

Khare underscored the paramount importance of ensuring the health and well-being of citizens, especially infants and young children. She stressed that any deviation from safety standards could lead to severe health concerns. Consequently, the Ministry urged the FSSAI to promptly investigate Nestle’s practices concerning the composition of Cerelac baby cereals sold in India.

In conclusion, Khare reiterated the urgency of the matter and expressed appreciation for the FSSAI’s swift attention to the issue. The call for action reflects the government’s commitment to upholding safety standards and safeguarding the health of its citizens, particularly the most vulnerable members of society.
