Google is saying goodbye to its Google Play Movies & TV, which has already been removed from Android TV.

Google is making strategic changes to its entertainment services by discontinuing the Google Play Movies & TV app. The company is gradually phasing out the app and transitioning Android and iOS users to the Google TV app. Additionally, the app will be removed from platforms like Roku and most smart TVs.

To ensure a smooth transition for users, Google has outlined a roadmap for them to continue enjoying their downloaded shows and movies. According to Google’s Android TV Help support page, users with Android TV-powered TVs or streaming devices will be able to buy and rent movies and TV shows through a Shop tab within the YouTube app starting January 17.

The YouTube app on cable boxes and set-top boxes running Android TV will also take over the services previously provided by the Google Play Movies and TV apps. Web users will be able to access their entertainment on YouTube as well.

Although Google Play Movies & TV will no longer be available on Android TV devices or the Google Play website, users will still have access to their previously purchased titles, including active rentals, on Android TV devices, Google TV devices, the Google TV mobile app (Android and iOS), and YouTube.

According to a report by 9to5 Google, Google has already started redirecting users to the Shop tab within the YouTube app to ensure a seamless entertainment experience. This demonstrates Google’s commitment to maintaining user access to their purchased content and facilitating smooth transitions despite platform changes.

The report indicates that Google’s decision to consolidate its entertainment services within the YouTube platform aligns with a wider pattern observed in the technology and entertainment sectors. This pattern is exemplified by Apple’s recent overhaul of its TV app, which seamlessly combines Apple TV+ content with movie and TV show purchases and rentals. Such developments highlight the industry’s collective emphasis on enhancing user experiences and providing integrated solutions.
