An official reported on May 29 that heavy rain in Manipur’s Imphal Valley has caused floods, affecting hundreds of people. The Imphal River has overflowed, leading to the inundation of numerous areas and the entry of water into hundreds of houses. As a result, several thousand individuals have sought shelter at nearby community halls. The continuous rainfall has had a significant impact on the normal life in Manipur.
The breach of the riverbank near Keirang, Khabam, and Lairiyengbam Leikai areas in Imphal East district has resulted in the flooding of numerous houses. The Heingang and Khurai Assembly constituencies in Imphal East district have also been severely affected, with floodwater reaching chest level in many parts. While official figures are not yet available, it is estimated that over 4,000 people have been affected by the flood. Chief Minister N. Biren Singh acknowledged the situation, highlighting the impact on both people and livestock.
Various authorities, including State Government officials, security personnel, NDRF personnel, and local volunteers, are working tirelessly to provide assistance to those affected. Stranded individuals are being relocated to safe areas using boats. In addition, officials have reported that the Irang Bailey Bridge, a crucial structure on NH 37 connecting Imphal and Silchar, collapsed in Taobam village in Noney district due to heavy rain on Tuesday evening.
