“Delhi Government Petitions Supreme Court Over Water Crisis Amid Heatwave”

The Delhi government has taken the matter of the water crisis during the scorching heatwave conditions in the national capital to the Supreme Court. The plea made by the Delhi government seeks the allocation of additional water from neighboring states such as Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh for a period of one month to address the water scarcity issue.

Delhi has been experiencing extreme heatwave conditions recently, with temperatures reaching up to 50 degrees Celsius in certain areas of the city. To combat this, the Delhi government has implemented various emergency measures, including prohibiting the use of potable water for car washing and construction activities.

The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has announced a penalty of Rs 2,000 for individuals found wasting water. Additionally, Water Minister Atishi has established a war room at the DJB to oversee water tanker distribution, which will be supervised by a senior IAS officer. Residents in need of a water tanker can contact 1916 for assistance.

The soaring temperatures in Delhi have led to a record peak power demand of 8,302 MW on Wednesday afternoon. This marks the first time in the history of the national capital that the power demand has exceeded 8,300 MW. Power distribution companies had initially projected the peak demand to be 8,200 MW for this summer, according to officials from the discom.
