The T20 World Cup 2024 is scheduled to take place next year, with West Indies and America as joint hosts. However, there are concerns surrounding three matches of the tournament due to a crisis. This is because Dominica has declined to host the matches of T20 World Cup 2024.
The upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, scheduled for June next year, will be jointly hosted by West Indies and America. However, there has been a change in the hosting plans as Dominica has declined to host the matches. The Ministry of Tradition, Youth, Sports, and Community Development of Dominica made an official announcement regarding this decision. The reason behind Dominica’s withdrawal from hosting is the delay in completing the stadium development work within the given timeframe.
Dominica failed to meet the deadline for completing the stadium development work, resulting in the government’s decision to withdraw its hosting of the T20 World Cup matches. It is important to note that Dominica is among the seven Caribbean countries selected to host these matches. Originally, Windsor Park was scheduled to host one group match and two Super-8 matches.
What was the statement made by the government of Dominica?
“Several measures were implemented at both Windsor Park Sports Stadium and Benjamin Park, which included initiating the expansion and upgrades of practice and match venues, constructing additional pitches as needed, and more. However, after reviewing the timelines provided by different contractors, it became evident that completing these tasks in time for the tournament’s commencement was not feasible.
Consequently, a decision has been made to not host any matches of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. The Dominica government is unable to accommodate these matches. It is important to note that Dominica has previously demonstrated exceptional hosting capabilities for international cricket. Therefore, this decision has been made with the best interests of all parties involved in mind.”
The Government of Dominica expresses its gratitude to Cricket West Indies for their longstanding partnership and eagerly anticipates further collaboration in the future. The Government of Dominica extends its best wishes to the organizers for a prosperous tournament. We await the response from the ICC.
