Suvendu Adhikari, a leader of the BJP, penned a letter to the West Bengal Governor requesting an investigation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) into the clashes that occurred during a Ram Navami procession in Murshidabad’s Rejinagar area. Approximately 20 individuals sustained injuries as stones were hurled at the procession from rooftops. Prohibitory orders under Section 144 have been enforced in the region. In the meantime, a woman was wounded in an explosion in the Shaktipur area of the district. Authorities are still determining whether it was a bomb blast or if the explosion occurred due to other causes. These incidents have sparked a verbal dispute between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the BJP. While the BJP attributed the clashes in Rejinagar to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s inflammatory communal speeches, the TMC accused the saffron party of instigating tensions in the lead-up to the Lok Sabha elections.
RAM NAVAMI CLASHES IN BENGAL’S MURSHIDABAD: TOP POINTS
A number of videos have emerged on social media platforms, depicting individuals hurling stones at a Ram Navami procession from the rooftops in the Rejinagar area of Murshidabad. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has claimed that shops were also subjected to vandalism.
As tensions escalated, the police resorted to a lathi charge and fired tear gas shells in order to disperse the crowd. Those who sustained injuries have been admitted to Murshidabad Medical College.
Subsequently, the situation was brought under control, and additional security forces have been deployed in the vicinity. Section 144 has been enforced in the district, prohibiting gatherings of more than five individuals.
The BJP further alleged that another Ram Navami procession in Egra, Medinipur, was targeted and pelted with stones. Amit Malviya, a member of the BJP, stated that party workers would surround the Egra police station to protest against this “brutal attack.”
Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition in the Bengal Assembly, penned a letter to Governor Ananda Bose, asserting that Ram Navami processions were disrupted and assaulted in various locations throughout the state as a result of Mamata Banerjee’s provocative speech. Adhikari demanded an investigation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) into these incidents and urged the Election Commission of India to take action against the Chief Minister.
