The opening of Sudarshan Setu by Prime Minister Narendra Modi represented a significant achievement in India’s infrastructure development. As the longest cable-stayed bridge in the country, spanning 2.32 kilometers, Sudarshan Setu connects the Okha mainland to Beyt Dwarka in Gujarat.
What distinguishes Sudarshan Setu is not only its impressive length but also its distinctive design features. The incorporation of a footpath embellished with verses from the Bhagavad Gita and depictions of Lord Krishna brings a cultural and spiritual aspect to the bridge. This design decision not only highlights India’s diverse cultural legacy but also provides a tranquil and reflective journey for those traversing the bridge.
In addition, Sudarshan Setu serves not only as a means of transportation but also as a significant step towards sustainability. By generating a substantial amount of one megawatt of electricity, the bridge actively contributes to the reduction of carbon emissions and the promotion of clean energy solutions. With a width of 27.20 meters and footpaths measuring 2.50 meters on both sides, the bridge ensures the safe passage of both pedestrians and vehicles. Its strategic location, connecting the Okha mainland with Beyt Dwarka, an island near the Okha port, holds particular significance. Beyt Dwarka is situated approximately 30 kilometers away from Dwarka town, renowned for the Dwarkadhish Temple, a sacred place dedicated to Lord Krishna.
Formerly referred to as the ‘Signature Bridge’, the structure has now been rebranded as ‘Sudarshan Setu’, symbolizing its importance and the cultural values of the area. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in anticipation of the bridge’s opening, highlighted its role in improving connectivity and fostering progress in the region. Prior to its establishment, pilgrims had to depend on boat services to reach the Dwarkadhish Temple. The bridge is seen as a resolution to the local residents’ issues and is a part of PM Modi’s vision for the development of ‘Viksit Bharat’.
Launched by the Central government in 2017, the Sudarshan Setu bridge aims to address transportation difficulties for worshippers commuting between Okha and Bet Dwarka. Expected to boost tourism, save time, and enhance access to quality healthcare, the Sudarshan Setu shows great potential for the region. Furthermore, PM Modi is scheduled to inaugurate several projects in Jamnagar, Devbhumi Dwarka, and Porbandar districts, which includes the electrification of a 533-km railway line and the opening of offshore pipelines at Vadinar under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
