Congress Member of Parliament Charanjit Singh Channi lodged a Privilege Motion on Tuesday against Prime Minister Narendra Modi for sharing deleted parts of BJP MP Anurag Thakur’s comments on Rahul Gandhi’s caste in Parliament. Channi highlighted several offensive remarks made by the BJP MP in the Lok Sabha, some of which were removed from the records by Congress MP Jagdambika Pal, who presided over the session.
The Prime Minister shared the full speech on X, emphasizing that it was a necessary listen and a flawless blend of information and entertainment, revealing the unethical tactics of the INDI Alliance.
The Prime Minister faced criticism from the Congress for allegedly promoting a “serious breach of parliamentary privilege” by sharing a speech.
Jairam Ramesh, a senior Congress leader, described Anurag Thakur’s speech as “highly abusive and unconstitutional”.
During a discussion on the Union Budget, Thakur’s comments about Rahul Gandhi’s caste sparked opposition protests.
Thakur made a veiled reference to Gandhi’s caste while discussing the census, leading to accusations of insult and abuse from Gandhi himself. Despite this, Gandhi stated that he would not demand an apology.
Gandhi emphasized that although he could endure insults, the caste census bill would still be passed in Parliament.
The controversy spilled over into the Lok Sabha the following day, resulting in chaotic scenes as Opposition members demanded an apology from Thakur for his remarks. Numerous MPs from Congress, DMK, Samajwadi Party, and Shiv Sena (UBT) protested in the House, leading to adjournments.
