The government led by Narendra Modi established a committee on Friday to oversee the situation along the Indo-Bangladesh border, as announced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
“In response to the prevailing circumstances in Bangladesh, the Modi administration has formed a committee tasked with monitoring the current conditions at the Indo-Bangladesh Border (IBB). This committee will facilitate communication with relevant authorities in Bangladesh to safeguard the welfare and security of Indian citizens, particularly Hindus and other minority groups residing in the region,” Shah stated on X.
The Border Security Force (BSF) has heightened surveillance along the borders adjacent to Bangladesh. Security agencies have alerted the BSF that more than 1,200 inmates, including individuals identified as terrorists, have escaped from prisons in Bangladesh and may attempt to cross into India.
The BSF has advised residents living along the 4,096 km-long India-Bangladesh international border to refrain from unnecessary movement in border areas, particularly during nighttime.
BSF officials informed HT that businesses along the border have been instructed to cease operations by 9 PM.
During a parliamentary session, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stated that the government is closely monitoring the situation in Bangladesh concerning the safety of minority groups.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to Professor Muhammad Yunus on his appointment as the chief advisor of Bangladesh’s interim government, stating, “I convey my best wishes to Professor Yunus as he undertakes his new responsibilities. We anticipate a swift return to normalcy, with a focus on ensuring the safety and protection of Hindus and all minority communities. India is dedicated to collaborating with Bangladesh to achieve the common aspirations of our peoples for peace, security, and development.”
