In 1998, the Indian Army successfully carried out nuclear tests at Pokhran. The tests, known as “Operation Shakti,” showcased India’s nuclear capabilities and positioned it as the sixth nation globally to possess nuclear armaments. Five nuclear devices were detonated below ground at the Pokhran Test Range in Rajasthan.

These devices comprised four atomic bombs and one hydrogen bomb, also referred to as a fusion or thermonuclear device. The tests were overseen by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who declared that May 11 would be commemorated as National Technology Day from then on.
