The National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported that two consecutive earthquakes measuring 4.9 and 4.8 on the Richter scale struck the Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir early on Tuesday morning. The initial quake, registering a magnitude of 4.9, took place at approximately 6:45 am, while the subsequent tremor, with a magnitude of 4.8, was detected at a depth of around 10 kilometers.
Currently, there are no reports of injuries or major damage. Officials are keeping a close watch on the situation for any updates.
Earthquake Vulnerability of India
India is particularly susceptible to seismic activity owing to its geographical configuration. The nation is situated on the Indian tectonic plate, which is in a continuous state of collision with the Eurasian plate.
The northern and northeastern parts of the country are especially vulnerable to earthquakes, largely due to their mountainous landscapes. India is categorized into four seismic zones, with the majority of the northern and northeastern regions classified under Zone 4 and Zone 5, both of which are recognized as highly active seismic areas.
