Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday flagged the misuse of artificial intelligence to create ‘deepfakes’ and said the media should educate people about the menace. Deepfake videos are synthetic media in which a person in an existing image or video is replaced with someone else’s image.
Modi’s statement comes days after a ‘deepfake’ video of actress Rashmika Mandanna went viral on social media, which is suspected to have been created with the help of artificial intelligence. The original video was said to be of a British-Indian influencer whose face was edited with Mandanna’s face.
Addressing reporters at the BJP’s Diwali Milan event at the party headquarters in New Delhi, Modi also mentioned his resolve to make India a ‘developed India’ and said these are not just words but ground reality.
He also said that ‘Vocal for Local’ has received support from the people. Modi further said that India’s achievements during the COVID-19 pandemic have instilled confidence among the people that the country is not going to stop now.
He also said that Chhath Puja has become a ‘national festival’ and it is a matter of great joy.
