Updates on Cyclone Dana: As it approaches coastal Odisha, Cyclonic Storm Dana is expected to make landfall early on Friday morning, bringing with it thunderstorms and a lot of rain. After Cyclone Dana makes landfall, it is expected to bring torrential rains to coastal Odisha and southern West Bengal, potentially affecting nearly half of the state’s population.
Only 30% of the population, or around 3–4 lakh people, who were living in the designated “danger zone” had been evacuated by Wednesday night, according to Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who assessed the state government’s readiness.
On Thursday morning, all hazard zones will continue to be evacuated. Cyclone Dana is expected to make landfall early Friday between Bhitarkanika National Park and Dhamra port, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). However, the process of landfall is scheduled to start on the evening of October 24.
According to IMD DG Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, the top speed throughout the landfall process is probably going to be about 120 kmph. “Therefore, heavy rainfall, wind and storm surge will reach the peak during the landfall time which is between October 24 night and October 25 morning,” he stated..

Evacuation underway in Bhadrak:
Ahead of Cyclone Dana’s arrival, the district government of Bhadrak, Odisha, evacuated residents to cyclone shelters on Thursday. It is anticipated that the cyclone will reach land tomorrow, October 25.
Dilip Routrai, the collector for Bhadrak, told ANI, “We are evacuating the residents from locations that are vulnerable. While some people are being brought by the police because they don’t want to leave their houses, others are coming on their own.”

“At midnight, the cyclone Dana became a severe cyclonic storm, and it has been moving north-west at a speed of 12 km/h over the last 6 hours. It is currently lying over the central and adjacent north-west Bay of Bengal,” Director IMD Manorama Mohanty told ANI. As a strong cyclonic storm, it will make landfall between midnight today and the early hours of October 25. The crossing wind speed will be between 100 and 110 kilometers per hour. Heavy rainfall and a gradual increase in wind speed are predicted for the capital city, with tonight probably seeing the maximum wind speed.

1.14 lakh people evacuated in West Bengal
With catastrophic cyclone ‘Dana’ threatening the nearby Odisha coast, officials announced Wednesday that more than 1.14 lakh people in West Bengal have already been moved to safer shelters.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclone is predicted to make landfall between Bhitarkanika National Park and Dhamra Port in Odisha by Friday morning, with wind gusts of up to 120 kmph (75 mph).

Due to Cyclone Dana, flight operations at Bhubaneswar’s Biju Patnaik International Airport will be suspended for 16 hours starting Thursday evening, according to a statement.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts that by Friday morning, the cyclone would likely make landfall in Odisha between Bhitarkanika National Park and Dhamra Port, with wind gusts of up to 120 kmph.
“Airport operation will be suspended from 5 pm on October 24 to 9 am on October 25 due to cyclone Dana,” the announcement read.

In light of Cyclone Dana, which is threatening to affect almost half of the state’s population as it barrels toward the coastline region, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi claimed that by Wednesday evening, over 30% of the 10 lakh people who were targeted had been evacuated to safe locations.
He examined the government’s readiness for the storm that is predicted to pass near Bhitarkanika and Dhamra early on Friday along the Odisha coast.
