Samples of cough syrup don’t pass quality tests, according to a central drug regulator report

Samples from batches of pharmaceuticals, including Shelcal, Vitamin B Complex with Vitamin C Softgels, vitamin C and D3 pills, and Ciprofloxacin tablets, were included in the CDSCO’s drug alert for August.

Antibiotics including Amoxicillin and Potassium Clavulanate pills, as well as high blood pressure drugs like Telmisartan and Atropine Sulphate, have also been labeled as “not of standard quality”.

Some drug batches were found to be phony or to have problems with consistency of volume, while other batches failed the “dissolution test” according to the Indian Pharmacopoeia and the “Assay” and “water” test according to IP.

Every month, a list of medications that are “not of standard quality” is provided, according to an official source.

The drug regulator keeps a close eye on medications, and each month, samples are randomly tested to make sure they meet safety and quality requirements. Action is taken against manufacturing enterprises in accordance with findings of substandard quality, the source stated.

The CDSCO reports that no information about the Not of Standard Quality (NSQ) Alert for August 2024 has been submitted by the drug licensing authorities of Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Manipur, Rajasthan, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Punjab, Sikkim, and Tamil Nadu.

It stated that the following states have not supplied data: Pondicherry, Telangana, Delhi, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Andaman and Nicobar, Dadar and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, and Lakshadweep.
