Senior Trinamool Congress leader and Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament Sukhendu Sekhar Ray has announced his intention to participate in the midnight protest concerning the rape and murder of a 31-year-old physician at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The seasoned politician conveyed his decision via a post on X. “Tomorrow, I will stand with the protesters, particularly as a father and grandfather, just like countless Bengali families. We must respond to this situation. The cruelty against women must end. Let us unite in resistance, regardless of the consequences,” he stated in a message late last night.
In response to a comment from a user on X suggesting that he might face expulsion from the Trinamool Congress for opposing his own government, he replied, “There is no need to concern yourself with my future. The blood of a freedom fighter runs through my veins, and I am not worried in the least.”
The 75-year-old individual has been serving as a member of the Upper House of Parliament since 2011 and has held the position of Deputy Leader of the Trinamool Congress within the House. Women in Kolkata and various regions of Bengal are set to participate in a significant protest late tonight in response to the rape and murder of a doctor at a state-run hospital. This demonstration, commencing at 11:55 PM, has been characterized as a movement “For women’s independence on the midnight of independence.”

Notable personalities, including actress Swastika Mukherjee, actress Churni Ganguly, and filmmaker Pratim D Gupta, have urged the public to attend the midnight assembly at the locations most accessible to them.
The city of Kolkata has been profoundly affected by the tragic incident involving the rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor who was on night duty at the state-run hospital. The victim was discovered deceased on Friday morning in a seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, located in the northern part of the city. Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer who regularly visited the hospital, has been taken into custody in relation to the case. The Calcutta High Court issued an order yesterday for the transfer of the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The court highlighted significant shortcomings on the part of the hospital administration and raised concerns regarding the potential destruction of evidence. “Despite the passage of five days, there have been no substantial findings, which should have been achieved by this time. Consequently, we believe there is a considerable risk that evidence may be compromised. We find it necessary to transfer the case to the CBI without delay,” the court stated.
