Former Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has set an ambitious target for India’s automotive industry: to completely eliminate petrol and diesel vehicles within the next ten years. During a recent public rally, Gadkari emphasized the government’s dedication to transitioning towards cleaner and more sustainable transportation options.
Gadkari declared, “I aim to remove diesel and petrol vehicles from our country within a decade,” highlighting the growing viability of electric vehicles (EVs) as viable alternatives. He pointed out that electric scooters, cars, and buses have become feasible choices, with the added benefit of consuming electricity worth only Rs 4 compared to the Rs 100 spent on diesel.
While Gadkari has previously discussed the elimination of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, he had not provided a specific timeline. Additionally, he intends to reduce the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on hybrid vehicles and has committed to eliminating all 36 crore petrol and diesel vehicles in the country. When questioned about the feasibility of completely phasing out petrol and diesel cars, Gadkari expressed confidence, stating, “It is challenging but not impossible. This is my vision.”
Thought: Is India ready for mass EV adoption?
Over the past few years, India has witnessed a notable surge in the acceptance of electric vehicles. Nevertheless, it is crucial to recognize that the existing EV charging infrastructure is inadequate to facilitate widespread adoption, despite the increasing popularity of electric cars and two-wheelers nationwide. Given the limited EV infrastructure and the high initial expenses associated with electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles present a practical temporary solution. Additionally, the exorbitant fuel prices for conventional internal combustion engine vehicles further enhance the attractiveness of hybrid alternatives.
