Let’s express our gratitude to all the police officers who work tirelessly to ensure our safety and peace.

New Delhi, October 21, 2023 – India observes Police Commemoration Day today to pay homage to the brave police officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice while safeguarding the nation. This solemn day is a reminder of the unwavering dedication and valor displayed by the Indian police force in the face of danger.

Police Commemoration Day, celebrated every year on October 21st, is a tribute to those who have laid down their lives in the line of duty. It is a time to reflect on the significant role that law enforcement agencies play in maintaining law and order, and ensuring the safety of citizens.

The history of this observance dates back to 1959 when a tragic incident occurred at Hot Springs in Ladakh. A contingent of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) faced an armed attack from Chinese forces. In the ensuing battle, ten ITBP personnel made the supreme sacrifice to protect the integrity of the nation. This day was later marked as Police Commemoration Day to honor not only these brave ten but also all the police officers who have died in the line of duty.

On this occasion, various events and ceremonies take place across the country. Police personnel pay their respects to the fallen heroes by offering floral tributes and observing a two-minute silence. The President and the Prime Minister of India often pay homage to the Police Memorial in New Delhi.

Police Commemoration Day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices and challenges faced by our law enforcement officers while working tirelessly to maintain peace and security. It underscores the importance of recognizing and supporting the police force in their mission to protect and serve the nation.
