Rahul Gandhi, a leader of the Congress party, has alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the “architect” behind the electoral bonds “scandal”. Gandhi claimed that the prime minister is resorting to interviews now that his alleged wrongdoing has been exposed.
In a conversation with news agency ANI, Prime Minister Modi defended the electoral bonds, stating that they were designed to tackle the issue of black money and that “there will be remorse when there is a fair assessment”. He further criticized the opposition for disseminating falsehoods regarding electoral bonds.
The Congress leader highlighted that the electoral bonds reveal a pattern where donors receive contracts or have CBI inquiries against them withdrawn shortly after purchasing the bonds. Rahul Gandhi also mentioned that the Prime Minister is granting interviews to ANI due to being caught in this scheme.
The Prime Minister was also urged by the Congress leader to clarify the circumstances under which certain companies made donations to the BJP through electoral bonds right after they became the subject of investigation by the central probe agency. On February 15 of this year, the Supreme Court declared the electoral bonds scheme as unconstitutional. This scheme had faced criticism from opposition parties due to its provision of keeping the donors’ identities anonymous.
