TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan, who was apprehended by the West Bengal police on Thursday morning, is now under a 10-day police custody as ordered by the Basirhat Court. The arrest is in connection with allegations of sexual assault and land grab in the Sandeshkhali area. In a recent development, the West Bengal CID has taken charge of the investigation into the cases filed against Sheikh. Advocate Raja Bhowmick, the lawyer representing Sheikh Shahjahan, stated that although the police requested a 14-day custody, the court granted a 10-day custody. Sheikh will appear in court again on the 10th of March. Commenting on the news of Shahjahan’s custody, Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition, expressed it as a “victory of democracy.”
Amit Malviya, a member of the BJP, criticized CM Mamata Banerjee and stated that the state government had no choice but to arrest him. Malviya also accused TMC leaders of engaging in similar acts of violence in order to secure votes for Mamata Banerjee. “After defending Shahjahan Sheikh in the West Bengal Assembly, Mamata Banerjee was forced to allow the WB Police to arrest him. Sheikh was accused of sexual violence, murder, land grab, and assault on government officials in #Sandeshkhali,” Malviya stated in a post on X.
