Today, PM is set to inaugurate India’s longest sea bridge “Atal Setu”, highlighting what is permissible and what is prohibited?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewri-Nhava Sheva Atal Setu today, which is the longest sea bridge in India. The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, constructed at a cost of ₹ 17,840 crore, has significantly contributed to the country’s infrastructure development.

In December 2016, PM Modi laid the foundation stone of this historic bridge, named Atal Setu in honor of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Spanning 21.8 kilometers, the Atal Setu connects Sewri in Mumbai to the Nhava Sheva area in Raigad district. This remarkable bridge will greatly reduce travel time between the two locations, cutting it down from the current two hours to approximately 15-20 minutes.

Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, the Metropolitan Commissioner of MMRDA, expressed his admiration for the remarkable infrastructure project, the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, stating that it will be inaugurated by PM Modi on January 12. This bridge, known as Atal Setu, is a testament to India’s engineering prowess as it is the longest bridge constructed over the sea in the country. The construction of this bridge has utilized various cutting-edge technologies, some of which are being introduced for the first time in India. Notably, the lighting system employed in this bridge has been designed to ensure minimal disruption to the aquatic environment.

Here is What’s allowed and What’s not:
What’s allowed

The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) allows a maximum speed limit of 100 kmph for four-wheelers. For cars, taxis, light motor vehicles, minibuses, and two-axle buses, the maximum speed limit is set at 100 kilometers per hour. During the ascent and descent of the bridge, the speed will be limited to 40 kilometers per hour.

What’s not allowed

The authorities have announced that motorbikes, auto rickshaws, and tractors are prohibited from accessing the sea bridge. Additionally, motorcycles, mopeds, three-wheelers, animal-drawn vehicles, and slow-moving vehicles are also not permitted. Furthermore, multi-axle heavy vehicles, trucks, and buses heading towards Mumbai are restricted from entering the Eastern Freeway.

An official has conveyed that the Mumbai police have enforced a speed limit on India’s longest sea bridge in order to mitigate “hazards, obstructions, and inconvenience to the general public.”
