A complaint was lodged a couple of days ago against Nayanthara’s film ‘Annapoorani’ for causing offense to religious beliefs. Consequently, the movie was taken down from Netflix.
Netflix has taken down the movie ‘Annapoorani’, featuring Nayanthara, from its platform following allegations made by Hindu groups that the film is “anti-Hindu”. A legal case has been filed against the movie for causing offense to religious sentiments. The film initially released in theaters on December 1 and later became available for streaming on Netflix starting from December 29. However, just a week after its release on the OTT platform, it has faced severe criticism.
Ramesh Solanki, the founder of the Hindu IT cell, lodged a complaint stating that the movie has deeply hurt Hindu religious sentiments. The complaint has been filed against various individuals including actors Nayanthara and Jai, writer-director Nilesh Krishna, producers Jatin Sethi, R Ravindran, and Punit Goenka, Zee Studios Chief Business Officer Shariq Patel, as well as Monika Shergill, the head of Netflix India.
Netflix has decided to remove the movie ‘Annapoorani’, which received unfavorable feedback from both critics and viewers. The film, directed by newcomer Nilesh Krishnaa, faced criticism not only from Ramesh Solanki but also from Shriraj Nair, the spokesperson of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP). In response to these concerns, Netflix has taken the decision to take down the film.
He utilized X as a platform to distribute a snippet from the movie and expressed, “We strongly caution @NetflixIndia to promptly remove this malicious film of yours, or else prepare to confront legal repercussions and face action similar to that of @BajrangDalOrg. @ZeeStudios_ (sic).”
‘Annapoorani’ revolves around the life of a determined woman named Annapoorani, who comes from a Brahmin family residing in the traditional town of Srirangam. Despite being torn between her aspirations and the conservative values instilled in her since childhood, she refuses to let her caste and religious disparities hinder her progress.
Ramesh Solanki filed a complaint alleging that the movie was endorsing ‘love jihad’. However, it is important to note that Nayanthara’s character, Annapoorani, and Jai’s character, Farhan, share a platonic bond in the film. The movie does not delve into their romantic relationship.
Annapoorani’ features Nayanthara, Sathyaraja, Jai, Achyuth Kumar, KS Ravikumar, Karthik Kumar and Renuka in pivotal roles.
